Whether you’re remodeling your home or building a new one, selecting your kitchen and bathroom cabinets can be difficult with so many options to choose from. In this month’s blog, Avatar shares valuable information on selecting the best cabinets for your home and budget.

When choosing cabinetry for your kitchen or bathroom, consider the types of cabinets, quality of construction, and levels of customization.

Types of Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinets

There are four basic types of kitchen and bathroom cabinets:

1. Base Cabinets

Standard kitchen base cabinets are 24” deep, 34-1/2” tall and width comes in 3” increments starting at 9” and up to 54”.  The same goes for bathroom base cabinets, but at 21” deep.  You will find that all semi-custom and custom cabinet lines allow depth customization. Most base cabinets rest on top of a four-inch recessed riser called a “toe kick.”

2. Wall Cabinets

Because wall cabinets are mounted at a higher level, they are generally 12 inches deep. However, depth options vary with each manufacturer. Wall cabinets may be available in 12, 30, and 36 inch height increments. Again, check with your manufacturer. When specifying your wall cabinet height, be sure to consider any details (including cornices, decorative trim, etc.).

3. Tall Cabinets

Tall cabinets, which are typically used as pantry space and broom storage, are generally 83.5 inches tall and 12 inches deep. Your width and depth options will vary by manufacturer.

4. Specialty Cabinets

Specialty cabinets help homeowners maximize their space and address their unique storage needs. Options, which vary by manufacturer, may include hutches, corner cabinets, wine racks, appliance garages, etc.
